Our hugely popular learn to swim programme operates Monday to Saturday and adheres to the Swim England national standard inclusive of stages 1 through to 10. The Swim England Learn to Swim Programme is the leading national teaching syllabus for delivering safe, inclusive and effective lessons for all ages. At Formby Pool we are passionate about providing this important life skill to so many within our community and beyond. We also offer pre-swim school sessions for babies and toddlers, for more information please visit the lessons and courses section or view our Swim School Journey leaflet >

Here children learn more safety awareness, basic movement skills and water confidence as well as the basics of all the strokes.

Here we develop safe entries into the water, basic floating, travelling and rotation unaided to regain upright positions.

At this stage, we start to develop safe entries including submersion, travelling 10m on both front and back, progressing rotation skills and water safety knowledge.

Once the swimmers have reached this stage, they are moving from being beginners into improvers. We start to develop the understanding of buoyancy, refining the kicking techniques for all strokes and swimming 10m in all strokes to a given standard set by the ASA.

Here we develop ‘watermanship’ through sculling and treading water skills, and complete rotation. All strokes are performed to the given standard set by the ASA.

At this stage swimmers are moving from improvers to competent swimmers. We develop effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing; developing the water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise.

It is here we develop quality stroke techniques up to 100m, incorporating skills learnt and combining them to develop a linked routine and successfully complete an obstacle course that combines a variety of skills learnt throughout Stages 1 – 7.

These sessions are 45 minutes in length and follow on from Stage 7. The classes prepare the swimmers for competitive participation in Formby Swim Club as well as a great way to keep fit and healthy through aquatics. For more information please refer to our swimming club page.

Developed in association with the Royal Life Saving Society, Rookie teaches basic personal survival and lifesaving skills. Sessions are scheduled from 12 till 1 on Saturday’s, compromising of 30 minutes theory and 30 minutes practical (Water based).
